SAFETY TIPS FOR TRAVELLERS
Your trip abroad should be a wonderful experience.
By following these Safety Tips, you'll increase your chances of having a trouble-free journey!
Before you leave...
Make a list and check it twice.
Preparation is key when planning a successful trip. Overlooking
an essential item (airline tickets, visa) will cost you not only
time but money. Include your medicine in your carry-on luggage.
Arrive at the airport 90 minutes before your flight is
scheduled to leave. Always confirm your reservation with the
airline before you leave home. Check the information for travelers
available from the U.S. State department's Bureau of
Consular Affairs.
Do your homework before traveling abroad.
Visit the library or go online and get acquainted with your destination.
Get to know the people, the place, the currency and the
climate. Is it a sweater or an overcoat country? Bringing clothes
that will help you stay warm or cool can preserve your health.
Also, respect the culture of the country you are visiting, in the
way you dress, speak and act. Styles that are viewed as acceptable
in the U.S. may be seen as inappropriate in other countries.
Learn the language.
Or at least key words and phrases so that you can communicate
on a basic level. Making an effort to speak the language
instantly ingratiates you with people in your host country.
Pocket-size phrase books and easy-to-follow audiotapes are
good for starters. Learn how to say, "Where is the doctor?" and,
"I need help." in the native tongue.
What time is it?
Know the time zones of the country you’re visiting and prepare
yourself biologically for the trip by adjusting your sleeping patterns.
Consider purchasing a medical assistance plan
like one offered by SOS.
This "security blanket" will provide you with emergency medical
services, emergency evacuation, doctor referrals and other travel
assistance such as worldwide legal services, emergency message
transmission to home and cash for emergencies. Expect the
best, but prepare for the unexpected.
Make yourself physically comfortable…
and enjoy the journey!
When traveling by air, request an emergency-aisle seat for more
legroom. Eat lightly, drink water (no alcohol), and sleep on the
flight. Be sure to stretch on long flights and move about when
possible. When booking your flight, make sure any special
dietary needs are addressed. Time will fly if you do these simple
things.
Drive and ride defensively.
The primary cause of travel injuries and deaths is motor vehicle
accidents. Driving on the wrong side of the road or passing
in the wrong lane will definitely label you a foreigner and
perhaps even put you in harm’s way. Confine your driving to
daylight hours if you can, and always use your seatbelt.
